چکیده

The paper presents an overview of recent publications on the fluvial suspended sediment flux to the Arctic Ocean. The total suspended matter exported from the Russian territory is 102×10 t/year and from the Canadian Arctic is 125×10 t/year. The total suspended matter (TSM) flux to the Arctic (227×10 t/year) is very low, only about 1% of the global flux. Mean concentrations of suspended matter and specific sediment discharge are approximately one order of magnitude lower than the global concentration. An analysis of the trends in the sediment loads based on records of up to 62 years in length shows decreases (Yenisey), increases (Kolyma) and stability (Ob). Among the reasons for the very low concentrations and fluxes of suspended sediment in the Arctic rivers are thin weathering crusts on the Arctic watersheds, low precipitation, extensive permafrost, low temperatures for most of the year, large areas of swamps and lakes and a low level of human activity. A stochastic sediment transport model by Morehead et al. [Morehead, M.D., Syvitski, J.P., Hutton, E.W., Peckham, S.D., 2003. Modeling the temporal variability in the flux of sediment from ungauged river basins. Glob. Planet. Change 39, 95–110] is applied to the Arctic rivers to estimate the sediment load increase should the surface temperature of the drainage basin increase. For every 2 °C of warming a 30% increase in the sediment flux could result and for each 20% increase in water discharge, a 10% increase in sediment load could follow. Based on this model, an increase of the sediment flux of six largest arctic rivers (Yenisey, Lena, Ob, Pechora, Kolyma and Severnaya Dvina) is predicted to range from 30% to 122% by 2100. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Impacts of Ocean Acidification on Sediment Processes in Shallow Waters of the Arctic Ocean

Despite the important roles of shallow-water sediments in global biogeochemical cycling, the effects of ocean acidification on sedimentary processes have received relatively little attention. As high-latitude cold waters can absorb more CO2 and usually have a lower buffering capacity than warmer waters, acidification rates in these areas are faster than those in sub-tropical regions. The presen...

Deltas, freshwater discharge, and waves along the Young Sound, NE Greenland

A wide range of delta morphologies occurs along the fringes of the Young Sound in Northeast Greenland due to spatial heterogeneity of delta regimes. In general, the delta regime is related to catchment and basin characteristics (geology, topography, drainage pattern, sediment availability, and bathymetry), fluvial discharges and associated sediment load, and processes by waves and currents. Mai...

231 Pa and 230 Th in surface sediments of the Arctic Ocean : Implications for 231 Pa / 230 Th fractionation , boundary scavenging , and advective export

Activities of Pa and Th in surface sediments from the Arctic Ocean and Greenland–Norwegian Seas are used to examine the redistribution of these water-column produced tracers between the low productivity interior basins and high particle flux marginal areas. Sediment 231Paxs/ 230Thxs ratios throughout the Canadian and Eurasian Basins and the high particle flux Chukchi slope region are essentiall...

Timescales of fluvial activity and intermittency in Milna Crater, Mars

Milna Crater, Mars (23.4S, 12.3W) exhibits signs of fluvial modification early in Mars history, including a large multi-lobed fan deposit cut by several sinuous valleys. We describe the past hydrologic conditions in Milna and the surrounding area, including a potential lake with a volume of 50 km 3. We also introduce new methods (i) to calculate the timescale of sediment deposition by consideri...

Modeling vertical excursions of the redox boundary in sediments: Application to deep basins of the Arctic Ocean

A diagenetic reaction-transport model was used to simulate how the sediment redox boundary migrates in response to persistent or episodic changes in the deposition flux of degradable organic matter and the concentration of oxygen in the overlying bottom water. The position of the redox boundary is represented by the depth of oxygen penetration. The simulations reveal that the position of the re...
